FAQs

What is Matcha?

Matcha is the finely ground powder of shade grown, green tea leaves. It’s an integral part of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and Japanese culture.

It’s consumed in a variety of drinks and sweets.

Does matcha contain caffeine?

Yes, matcha does contain caffeine.

A 1g serving contains approximately 30-35g of caffeine. In comparison, a single shot of espresso contains 64g of caffeine.

Caffeine in matcha is released slower into the body than with coffee thanks to the amino acid L-theanine, that’s only found in green tea.

What is the shelf life for matcha?

When kept in a cool, dry place, unopened matcha can stay fresh for 6 to 12 months. Once opened, matcha is best enjoyed within 1–3 months (with proper storage)

What is the best way to store matcha?

Matcha is adversely affected by heat, humidity and light. When exposed to the above elements, matcha takes on a dull olive hue and the taste disintegrates.

It is best stored in a dark, cool place or refrigerated.

If frozen in an unopened pouch, matcha retains its freshness for several months.

To prevent matcha that was stored in the refrigerator or freezer from clumping when exposed to air, it should be allowed to warm up to room temperature before the package is opened.

Is your matcha Ceremonial Grade?

We avoid labelling our matcha as “Ceremonial Grade” as it’s mostly a marketing term with no standardisation authority or grading. Essentially any matcha can be labelled “ceremonial”.

However, all the matcha we source is high quality, first-harvest matcha that would be in line with the fine matcha used in tea ceremonies.

Where do you source your matcha from?

Our matcha and houjicha is sourced in partnership with the finest tea farms in Japan. Each small batch is imported directly by Cowcat Matcha.

Is your matcha toxin screened?

Yes. Our matcha is regularly screened for heavy metals, dioxins, mycotoxins, and pesticides. It's important for us that our matcha is safe for daily consumption.

Where are you based? Do you ship internationally?

We ship PAN India from our offices in Mumbai and Chennai.

Do you offer Cowcat Matcha for B2B?

As we focus on sourcing small batches of premium matcha we primarily work on a D2C model. But you are always welcome to contact us with your enquiries!
